Veterinarian

Dr Michelle Barton

Dr Michelle has been practicing veterinary medicine for many years, primarily in Brisbane, with a brief period working in the United Kingdom in the early 2000s. She enjoys all aspects of veterinary care, with particular interests in both surgery and internal medicine, as well as behavioural health.

A strong advocate for low-stress handling, Dr Michelle is passionate about helping shy, nervous, and anxious pets feel as comfortable as possible during their veterinary visits.

While she primarily treats dogs and cats, Dr Michelle also has a special interest in companion mammals, including rats and guinea pigs. She is a member of the Unusual Pet and Avian Veterinarians (UPAV) special interest group of the Australian Veterinary Association (AVA), as well as the Association of Exotic Mammal Veterinarians (AEMV).

Outside of general practice, Dr Michelle has served as a race veterinarian for dryland sled dog racing in Queensland since 2005. She has also volunteered as a race veterinarian for the renowned Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race in Alaska on five occasions, gaining firsthand experience working in some of the world’s most challenging winter conditions.

When she’s not at the clinic, Dr Michelle enjoys gardening and gaming. She has a particular passion for history—especially medical history—and participates in historical reenactments across several periods. At home, she shares her life with two sighthounds: Belle the Greyhound and Taz the Pharaoh Hound. Over the years, she has also cared for many cats, including hand-raising orphaned kittens.
